The film follows the weekly broadcast through prison walls\, portraying the many forms of distance that rural prison building creates—and the ceaseless work to end this racist system of mass incarceration and family separation. \nThe screening will be followed by a discussion with the film’s director\, Sylvia Ryerson (Assistant Professor in American Culture and Postdoctoral Scholar in the Michigan Society of Fellows)\, Ken Nixon (Safe & Just Michigan)\, and Chuck Warpehoski (Michigan Collaborative to End Mass Incarceration) on current efforts to address the realities of mass incarceration across Michigan. \nThis discussion comes at a pivotal moment: In 2025\, the Michigan Department of Corrections accepted bids for a new statewide contract deciding how thousands communicate with their families—through phone calls\, messages\, tablets\, and video visits. DESCRIPTION:The words “pedophile” and “sex offender” are easily thrown around. But what is a pedophile\,\nand who commits a sex offense? Learning the law is important\, not least so that you can avoid\nviolating it\, and prevent others from doing so. Michigan’s sex offense law is more\nencompassing than you think – over 40\,000 people are on its Registry\, and about 1\,000\nmust wear an electronic ankle tether for life. There are numerous online attractions that can\nlure the unwary\, from pornography to sexting to stings. Young people especially\, don’t know\nwhat’s legal or illegal\, and often don’t think about future consequences.
