SUMMARY:Calls from Home Film Screening and Discussion
DESCRIPTION:The Carceral State Project invites you to a free public screening of Calls from Home\, an award-winning short documentary film about a longstanding radio program that broadcasts messages of love through prison walls\, to reach people incarcerated far from home. The film follows the weekly broadcast through prison walls\, portraying the many forms of distance that rural prison building creates—and the ceaseless work to end this racist system of mass incarceration and family separation. \nThe screening will be followed by a discussion with the film’s director\, Sylvia Ryerson (Assistant Professor in American Culture and Postdoctoral Scholar in the Michigan Society of Fellows)\, Ken Nixon (Safe & Just Michigan)\, and Chuck Warpehoski (Michigan Collaborative to End Mass Incarceration) on current efforts to address the realities of mass incarceration across Michigan. \nThis discussion comes at a pivotal moment: In 2025\, the Michigan Department of Corrections accepted bids for a new statewide contract deciding how thousands communicate with their families—through phone calls\, messages\, tablets\, and video visits. Hear firsthand about local advocacy for more just\, transparent\, and affordable prison communications\, and why these systems must serve incarcerated people and their families. \nThe event is co-sponsored by the Carceral State Project\, the University of Michigan Department of American Culture and the Michigan Society of Fellows with support from MI-CEMI and Safe & Just Michigan. \nTickets can be reserved in advance through the State Theater events page.

SUMMARY:What Counts as a Sex Offense May Surprise You
DESCRIPTION:The words “pedophile” and “sex offender” are easily thrown around. But what is a pedophile\,\nand who commits a sex offense? Learning the law is important\, not least so that you can avoid\nviolating it\, and prevent others from doing so. Michigan’s sex offense law is more\nencompassing than you think – over 40\,000 people are on its Registry\, and about 1\,000\nmust wear an electronic ankle tether for life. There are numerous online attractions that can\nlure the unwary\, from pornography to sexting to stings. Young people especially\, don’t know\nwhat’s legal or illegal\, and often don’t think about future consequences. Did you know the\nmost common age to commit a sex offense is 14? \nRegister for $20 at https://www.campusce.net/elderwise/category/category.aspx# \nElderwise on-line course taught by Kathie Gourlay and Carolyn Madden in partnership with Michigan Citizens for Justice

SUMMARY:Participatory & Holistic Defense Learning Community
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an upcoming Learning Community session exploring participatory and holistic defense\, two approaches that expand how we support people navigating the legal system. These models center families and communities as active participants in defense while also addressing the underlying needs that bring people into contact with the system in the first place. \nElisheva Johnson of Emergent Justice will share how participatory defense organizes families and communities to influence case outcomes and shift power within the court system. Additional speakers will be announced soon\, including perspectives on holistic defense\, which connects individuals with supports such as social services\, housing advocacy\, and mental health care. \nThis session is part of our Incarceration Prevention Learning Community series\, focused on strategies that reduce system involvement and build stronger\, more supportive communities.
