Reporters hold tremendous power in shaping public perceptions about safety in our communities. Harmful stories told about crime, safety, and justice have held us back from reimagining proven, cost-effective solutions to public safety.
We’re calling on our media partners in Michigan to tell better, fuller, and fairer stories about safety and justice. Michigan advocates and I created this new guide, called “Fairer Reporting is Better Reporting.” It is a resource for Michigan reporters. It includes key facts and data, spokespeople, and recommended language. Use it when reporting on justice and safety issues in Michigan.
