Condition of confinement

THE PROBLEM
A majority of people who are sent to prison will return to the community again. Prisons should offer opportunities for all to understand and practice one’s role in promoting and maintaining a safe and supportive community. Because of limited resources, many correctional facilities lack a wide range of educational or skill based programs.
WHAT WE DO
This work group aims to create program proposals based on a cohort of community volunteers’ expertise to help bolster programming opportunities for people in prison. We are working to restore federal higher education Pell Grants to the incarcerated. And, we are promoting the broadcast of educational videos over prisons’ local cable tv channels.
IN RECENT NEWS
This work group is currently drafting a handbook in order to guide and support volunteer groups who are looking to start their own, local correspondence programs with incarcerated individuals.
