COVID-19 Vaccination Prioritization in Prisons & Jails

January 13, 2021

The Michigan Collaborative to End Mass Incarceration (MI-CEMI), recognizes that COVID-19 has been devastating for our incarcerated brothers and sisters. The state’s prioritization to vaccinate those held in congregate care facilities should be extended to those housed in correctional facilities, where COVID-19 infections are 983% higher than the general population. MI-CEMI strongly supports including people held in Michigan’s prisons and jails in the Phase 1A priority group for vaccinations.

We stand with the ACLU of Michigan, the State Appellate Defender Office, the Detroit Justice Center, Michigan Liberation, Safe & Just Michigan, the Michigan Center for Youth Justice, American Friends Service Committee, the Neighborhood Defender Service, the Michigan League for Public Policy and all individuals and organizations that recognize the inherent humanity of incarcerated citizens.
