Big Mama’s Cookout: MI-CEMI Learning Community Gathering

Responding To & Healing From Harm in Community
MI-CEMI’s Incarceration Prevention & Public Safety Learning Community Annual In-Person Gathering
Join MI-CEMI for a special in-person Learning Community gathering on August 9, 2026 at the Mama Akua Community House’s Big Mama’s Cookout as we break bread, build community, and learn from each other on how we can support healthy communities and healing responses to harm.
Location: Mama Akua Community House
Address: 2431 Ferry Park St, Detroit, MI 48208
Time:12:30-2:00 p.m.
(Program begins at approximately 1:00 p.m.; attendees are encouraged to arrive at noon to enjoy food and fellowship.)
Most Learning Community events are held virtually, but once each year we come together in person to share a meal, build relationships, and learn from one another.
This year’s conversation will focus on how we respond to harm and conflict in our communities. Through personal stories and guided discussion, participants will explore what healthy responses to harm can look like and how we can better support healing, accountability, and connection in our everyday lives.
The afternoon will include food, music, community conversation, and opportunities to connect with others from across Michigan.

Whether you are a longtime member of the Learning Community or joining us for the first time, we invite you to pull up a chair, share a meal, and help envision what healing responses to harm can look like in our families, neighborhoods, movements, and civic life.
